There are moments in life that gut-punch you so hard, it feels like the world shifts beneath your feet.
This past year has been one of those seasons for me.
Multiple family deaths. One after another after another. Each loss peeling back another layer of grief I didn’t even know was still hiding inside me.
And here’s the thing no one tells you: Grief doesn’t just hurt your heart. It rattles your nervous system. It stirs up old survival patterns buried so deep you thought they were long gone.
For me, it resurfaced the pattern I’ve worked so hard to understand, heal, and move beyond: Emotional eating.
When Grief Shakes Up Old Survival Patterns
Grief doesn’t just break your heart—it rattles your whole nervous system. After experiencing multiple family losses, I realized how easily old coping patterns—like emotional eating—can slip back in without warning.
It wasn’t some dramatic episode. There was no standing in front of the fridge at midnight crying into a pint of ice cream.
It was subtle. It was that quiet, gnawing feeling of needing something—anything—to take the edge off. A handful here. A bite there. Food as a buffer against sadness. Food as a shield against the fear that life could change in an instant. Food as a way to not have to feel so much, so fast.
Even with everything I know—everything I teach about emotional eating, nervous system regulation, subconscious reprogramming—my body went into protection mode.
“Grief doesn’t just break your heart. It rewires your body, your brain, and your cravings.”
Because that’s what emotional eating really is: Not a lack of willpower. Not a moral failing. But a survival strategy. An ancient, deeply wired response to overwhelming emotional pain.
A Personal Reminder: It’s Not About “Fixing” Yourself
In those heavy moments, I wasn’t mad at myself. I wasn’t judging myself.
I recognized what was happening. It was my body’s way of saying: “This hurts too much. This feels unsafe. Let me find a way to soothe you, the only way I know how.”
That’s when I realized… This is why I created The Emotional Eating Rewire Guide. Not because healing is a straight line. Not because I’m “above” struggling. But because real life will always test us. Because grief, stress, anger, sadness—they’re part of being human.
And when those waves hit? We need tools that honor our humanity, not shame it. We need frameworks that help us understand what’s happening inside us without piling on more guilt, more rules, or more restriction.
“Emotional eating isn’t a lack of willpower—it’s your nervous system’s way of begging for safety.”
