Are you burned out?

Are you burned out?

Are you burned out?

Do you start dreading Mondays and count down the days until the weekend?

Are you having trouble focusing or concentrating so every task feels like an uphill battle?

Feeling irritable and snapping at your loved ones for no reason?

Have trouble catching your breath because you’re overwhelmed?

If you’re experiencing any of these signs, you’re likely burned out and in need of a break from it all.

What does it mean to be “burned out”?

“Being burned out means feeling empty and mentally exhausted, devoid of motivation, and beyond caring.

People experiencing burnout often don’t see any hope of positive change in their situations. If excessive stress feels like you’re drowning in responsibilities, burnout is a sense of being all dried up. And while you’re usually aware of being under a lot of stress, you don’t always notice burnout when it happens.”

Most people know that being constantly stressed is bad for them, but many don’t realize the extent of the dangers.

Stress can lead to a wide variety of health problems, including heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. It can also cause mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.

Is Denise talking to me?

If I were sitting across from you in a coaching session I would ask you if you are feeling and or experiencing any of these signs:

  • Overwhelmed or stressed out
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Fatigue, insomnia, or problems with appetite
  • Pessimistic about your work
  • Exhausted or unmotivated
  • Irritable or impatient with co-workers, customers, or clients
  • Cynical or resentful about your work, family, and life
  • Withdrawing from colleagues or taking less interest in work-related activities
  • Needing to call out sick more often
  • Withdrawing from responsibilities
  • Procrastinating, taking longer to get things done.
  • Using food, medications, or alcohol to cope

Time to take steps to address the problem before it gets worse

Burnout can be caused by several factors; such as overworking, stress, and or lack of sleep. It’s not just limited to those in high-stress jobs, anyone can experience burnout if they’re not taking care of themselves.

The good news is that there are many things you can do to help prevent or overcome burnout:

-Take regular breaks throughout the day, even if it’s just for five minutes.

-Identify and then eliminate or reduce stressors in your life wherever possible.

-Make time for yourself to relax and rejuvenate (take a nap, do yoga or meditation, read a book, shut down all of your electronics and enjoy the quiet.)

-Get more sleep (6-8 hours per night)

-Talk to your doctor if you’re feeling overwhelmed and don’t know how to manage burnout on your own. They may be able to recommend some helpful resources or book a call to chat with Denise.

Preventing burnout from happening again.

There are several things you can do to prevent “burning out.”  Take time to look back and understand what caused it in the first place.

  1. Where can you make adjustments in your work, home, or personal life?
  2. Figure out if you are overcommitting yourself by saying “Yes” to too many things when you’d like to say “No”.
  3. Take an honest look at your calendar and see if you’re having issues managing your time, neglecting self-care, or ignoring the physical signs of being overly busy and stressed.
  4. Slow down and listen to your self-talk. Are you worrying too much about the future? Do you have negative, shaming, or judgmental thoughts running through your mind?
  5. Who are you “being” each day that may be contributing to your burnout?
  6. Are you always running on empty or living on caffeine and sugar? Could you be stuck in the habit of being in fight or flight mode and on the verge of burnout all of the time?

I know that these are tough questions to hear because I had to answer them at one point too. Therefore, it’s essential to investigate the role that you are playing in becoming burned out.
